Episode 75: Such Sights to Show You

After far too long, the Women In Caskets return with a much anticipated look at one of their favorite films of all time: Clive Barker's Hellraiser. And this time, they've brought a friend to solve the puzzle box with them, Lindsay Jones (RWBY, Camp Camp, Achievement Hunter, Rooster Teeth).

Join the intrepid trio as they discuss this blood-soaked fairy tale of love, lust and murder while marveling at the many uses of condoms and how this all could have been avoided with a good dominatrix. (Seriously, these people need professional help.)

Episode 69: Live at DePaul's Celebration of Slashers

This episode was recorded live at DePaul's Pop Culture Conference: A Celebration of Slashers!

Joined by the esteemed Dr. Karra Shimabukuro and Professor Danielle Meijer, Dawn posits the question: Were slasher films good for women or bad? You can probably guess the answer, but a wonderful time was had by all!

Dr. Karra Shimabukuro got her PhD in medieval and early modern English literature because she was interested in the origins of folkloric figures. Specifically, when she read Paradise Lost, she was interested in where Milton got his idea for Satan, why his portrayal was so different from others. She is interested in the intersection of folkloric figures, literary studies, and popular culture. Her work in medieval and early modern English literature allows her to see the origins of these figures. Folklore allows her to take a long view, from their origins, all the way through now, and popular culture. 

Her most recent work includes her book project “Devilish Leaders, Demonic Parliaments, and Diabolical Rebellions in Medieval and Early Modern English Literature,” and a book chapter that analyzes the role of the devil in the culture wars, and his connection to The Last Temptation of Christ and The Passion of the Christ.

Professor Danielle Meijer is an adjunct professor in philosophy at DePaul.  She's working on a book about child liberation and her favorite slasher film is "Who Can Kill a Child?" by Narciso Serrador.  

DePaul Pop Culture Conference is an annual fan/academic event at DePaul University. They host thoughtful discussions from fans, scholars, and media makers about popular culture and cult media. Each year's event is themed for an important Pop Culture anniversary.

Episode 56: Live from ArmadilloCon 2: Reality Bites

The Women in Caskets try to make sense of all those horror movies featuring, "Based on a True Story," in their title cards. From films that bear only a passing semblance to their source to somewhat faithful adaptations, serial killers to killer animals, and the truly gutsy ones that just made it all up and pretended it was real, it's a master list of the real-life macabre.

Stuff You Missed In History Class did an episode on two of the killers mentioned (and probably more): Mary Ann Cotton and Sawney Beane. Check them out!

And one correction: Dawn mis-identified the plaintiff in the Warren litigation. The Warrens didn't bring the lawsuit, Gerald Brittle, author of a book on the Warrens, did, claiming that the Warrens gave him exclusive rights to their stories and all derivative works coming out of them. Warner Bros. et al claim the movies are based on historical records and therefore available for free use. Brittle countered that the Warrens made it all up, making the works fiction and therefore - you know what, it's kinda hysterical to read it all, look it up sometime.

Live From Armadillocon: Creepy Kids

Join the Women In Caskets live from Armadillocon in Austin, TX! 

When invited to speak at a sci-fi/fantasy convention, Jen and Dawn of course turned to the scariest thing they could think of - kids. Creepy, powerful, and horrific kids. So join them as they discuss why the creepy kid is such a successful trope in horror, what makes a creepy kid and what movies (and a few TV shows) manage to knock it out of the ballpark. And along the way, they identify some crazy gaps in their cinematic knowledge and make some REALLY unfortunate word choices.
