So You Don't Have To: Jack and Diane

September 07, 2015  /  Dawn Humphrey

Descriptions are deceptive as Dawn suffers through Jack and Diane, a movie that mysteriously ended up in her horror queue.

As described, the movie is about, "The romance between two girls [that] quickly manifests as terrifying, violent and inexplicable," and yet plays out like an indie rom-com with a fascination for nosebleeds.

Trigger warning: This movie has a rape scene that is senseless, useless and utterly degrading. It's not graphically described, but it is mentioned.

Episode 13: The List

September 01, 2015  /  Dawn Humphrey

This episode tackles the question: What do you do when your feminist friends want to get into the horror genre? Well, after you take their hands and wish them well, you give them this list.

Welcome to the Women In Caskets “top” ten feminist friendly horror films. It was a hard list to compile and we’re sure you have your own takes, but after all the debate and hand-wringing here are our selections.

As promised, here is a list of our honorable mentions. Movies that we love and feel have good themes or characters, but didn't quite make the final cut.

The Blair Witch Project

Diabolique

Carrie

The Exorcist

Jennifer's Body

All Cheerleaders Must Die

Housebound

The Ring (US and Japanese versions)

May

A Tale of Two Sisters

Susperia

Death Proof/Planet Terror

And many, many more.

Thanks always to The Shape for the intro/outro music.

And a huge thanks to the guys at The Horror Show for letting us steal, ahem, borrow, their idea and make it our own.

Episode 12: "The Gift" That Keeps on Giving

August 15, 2015  /  Dawn Humphrey

Dawn and Jen are very disappointed in The Gift. Why? It's a prime example of their least favorite trope on parade: sexual assault as a plot device. Join the Women In Caskets as they give you a little cinematic cinematic history by looking at some of the biggest rape-centric films they've ever seen, and try to figure out why cinema just can't seem to move on from it.

Spoilers for The Gift (now in theaters) and trigger warnings for discussion of sexual assault and it's place in film. Short version: It shouldn't be.

NOTE: We incorrectly cited the lead actresses name, Rebecca Hall. We know, and we're sorry. We'll do better next time.

Thanks always to The Shape for the intro/outro music.

So You Don't Have To: Reeker

August 03, 2015  /  Dawn Humphrey

A movie so boring, even the editors fell asleep at the wheel. Join Dawn as she bravely attempts to get through this slog of a movie that started like a stoner comedy, took the sex out of sex scenes, and gave the worst example of on-screen CPR that Dawn has ever seen.

And those were the mildly interesting parts.

Oh! And something about a dude that smells, but you already got that part, right?

Episode 11: Odd Man Out

August 03, 2015  /  Dawn Humphrey

Jen and Dawn are joined by special guest Brett Tribe as they begin their journey through Elm Street with the very special, A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge. Pondering everything from dialogue bots, 80's parenting, and the unavoidable subtext of one (gay) teen's journey to becoming a homicidal maniac, the Caskets Crew tries to answer the question: Is this even an Elm Street movie?

Note: We apologize for the wonky sound, we were sharing mics and some were closer than others.

Thanks always to The Shape for the intro/outro music.
