Taped in front of a live convention audience, it's the first Annual Horror Romance Awards!

Hosted by your hopelessly romantic and bloodthirsty hosts, Jen and Dawn, The Women In Caskets honor this year those who exemplify romance, devotion, and fine homicidal homemaking. With categories ranging from "Relationship Goals" to "I Would Do Anything For You, But I Won't Eat That," there's an award for everyone.

Did your favorite get snubbed? Do you want to see this become an annual tradition? Let us know, we love hearing from you.

Thanks always to The Shape for the intro and outro music. Now also featuring intro backing via OCRemix.

Episode 77: We Need to Talk About the Rest of It

February 13, 2020  /  Dawn Humphrey

it-movie-stephen-king.jpg

This has been on the docket for a long time and it's finally here. Join Dawn and Jen as they pick apart the good and bad in both chapters of Andrés Muschietti's It.

There's a lot of good in these movies, and a lot of not good, so sit back, relax, and let your hosts get a lot of issues off their chests. A lot of issues.

And because of those issues, here are some content warnings for those who prefer them:

  • 43:30 - 46:30 Discussion of abusive relationships

  • 55:00 - 58:00 Discussion of homophobia and the death of Adrian Mellon

  • 1:04:40 - 1:08:45 Discussion of internalized homophobia and Richie Tozier

  • 1:13:50 - 1:18:08 Discussion of depression, suicide and Stanley Uris

Thanks always to The Shape for the intro and outro music. Now also featuring intro backing via OCRemix.

Episode 76: The List (Revisited)

November 01, 2019  /  Dawn Humphrey

Horror+Movies.jpg

In 2015, Jen and Dawn sat down to list out their choices for the 10 most feminist-friendly films for new horror fans to watch. It was a good list. A fine list. A fine and goodly list.

It is now an outdated list.

Join the Women In Caskets as they look back and realize mistakes were made and update their list to reflect many of the amazing films that have come out in the last four years, and pay homage to the ones that came before.

NOTE: Due to a scheduling glitch, this podcast and the next regular podcast are being played out of order so there are references to a "previous episode" that hasn't been released yet. That podcast will be released in the next month.

Now for some links to the episodes we've done on the films:

  • The Original List - Episode 13

  • Alien - The Rants Macabre Nov. 9th, 2015

  • Teeth - Episode 22

  • The Babadook - Episode 5

  • The Final Girls - Episode 32

  • The Love Witch - Episode 45 (with Director Anna Biller)

  • Raw - Episode 55

  • Revenge - Episode 74

And last, but not least, a shout-out to this years' honorable mentions. Not everyone can make the team, but they played on heck of a game: You're Next, The Craft, Gerald's Game, The Ranger, The Shape of Water, American Mary and Prevenge.

Thanks always to The Shape for the intro and outro music. Now also featuring intro backing via OCRemix.

Bonus Episode: We Need To Talk About Mike

September 04, 2019  /  Dawn Humphrey

chosen-jacobs-mike-hanlon-it-copertina.jpg

Welcome to the first of an experimental format here on the podcast, where a topic is chosen and one of your hosts takes a swing at it.

Today... we need to talk about Mike Hanlon and the new adaptation of Stephen King's It. How a brilliant and vital part of the Losers Club was reduced to a shadow of his former self, and how that may have happened.

So buckle in as we wind up the speculation machine and try to figure this all out, shall we?

If you like this format and want to see more, have an idea for a name, or an idea for a topic, please lets us know! We're available on Twitter (@womenincaskets) and email (podcast@womenincaskets.com) and we'd love to hear from you.

Also, if you would, please rate and review us on iTunes or wherever you catch your podcasts. It really means a lot to us.

There were a lot of inspirations and sources for this episode so here we go:

  • La Melle (BlackGirlNerds.com) "Mike Who? Mike Hanlon. The New Magical Negro of Derry, Maine."

  • Zak Cheney-Rice (Mic.com) "Mike Hanlon, the black kid in Stephen King’s ‘It,’ has a remarkable backstory. The movie erased it."

  • Jason Alston (Medium.com) "The Tragic Fall of Mike Hanlon: One of American Fiction’s Only Black Male Librarians is Re-Imagined… As a Drug Addict"

  • Travis Johnson (FilmInk.com.au) "Mike Hanlon: It‘s Invisible Loser"

  • Lindsay Ellis (YouTube.com/LindsayEllis) "The Hobbit: Battle of Five Studios (Part 2/2)"

Intro Music: "Have You Met Sir Belmont" Nostalvania (via OCRemix)

Outro Music: "Kindle the Soul" RoeTaKa (via OCRemix)
