Episode 35: Santa's Shadow

July 01, 2016  /  Dawn Humphrey

Welcome to Christmas in July where Dawn and Jen use the non-holiday to talk about some holiday movies they might have forgotten to watch over the actual holidays. Today's feature is 2015's twist on the family holiday movie: Krampus.

Along with some truly brilliant practical puppetry, an A+ subversion of sappy Christmas tales, and a truly horror-worthy ending, the hosts sing the praises of the humble casting director, Jen has a problem with envelopes and Dawn takes a missed plot opportunity and makes it better with a Tremors reference.

Thanks always to The Shape for the intro/outro music.

Episode 34: Wayward Sons

June 17, 2016  /  Dawn Humphrey

Note: This episode contains a special forward regarding the shooting at the Pulse club in Orlando Florida on June 12th 2016. If you find this event particularly triggering, the message ends at time stamp 9:15.

You've heard them mention it many a time, now it's time for Jen and Dawn to tell you why they love (and love to hate) the CW series Supernatural. Its brotherly banter, top-shelf spooks and a strong cast of characters often find themselves at odds with rampant fridging and its treatment of women, minorities and LGBT characters, but they love it anyways.

Plus, Dawn is right.

If you want to help the survivors of the Orlando shooting and make sure something like this never happens again, do something.

  • You can donate to the American Red Cross here: https://www.redcross.org/donate/donation
  • You can donate to the Pulse survivor's GoFundMe page here: https://www.gofundme.com/PulseVictimsFund
  • You can get the contact information for your Senators and Congressmen to demand action here: http://whoismyrepresentative.com/

Intro: Carry On Wayward Son by Kansas

Outro: Back in Black by AC/DC

Credit to TheJDfairy and DirtDiver62570 on You Tube for their compilations of brotherly banter and Bobby Singer's, "Idjit!" counts, respectively.

Episode 33: Deconstruction 101

June 01, 2016  /  Dawn Humphrey

After our look at The Final Girls, Dawn and Jen examine the concept of horror movie deconstruction in a bit more detail. There's a little bit of history, some great examples, and, well, a few detours to talk about peanut butter cups, The Brady Bunch and Jen's continuing crush on Josh Hartnett.

All of this with a look at what's coming up for the Women In Caskets for the next few months.

Episode 32: Subverting "The Final Girls"

May 23, 2016  /  Dawn Humphrey

Jen and Dawn look back at the 2015 gem, The Final Girls, which does what so many other movies fail to do: subvert the traditional final girl trope while being the perfect example of the final girl trope. Cliches that aren't as shallow as you think, a plot that keeps moving whether the characters want it to or not and Dawn's desperate attempt to keep at least one damn plot point a secret for the audience made for a fun chat.

Thanks always to The Shape for the intro/outro music.

Episode 31: The Payoff

May 01, 2016  /  Dawn Humphrey

Thanks to some shoddy guesswork and the foibles of public voting, the Women In Caskets recently lost a bet. The result is this, a podcast so filled with frustration and disappointment, it might as well be an episode of So You Don't Have To. What did we watch?

Gingerdead Man vs. Evil Bong

So join Dawn and Jen as they take a look at this cinematic marvel of epic failure, sexist commentary, outright racism, and oh, we wish we were kidding, a pastry tribunal.

The winner of Save Horror's March Madness bracket challenge was Mindy of The Rants Macabre.
Our fellow losers were The Miskatonic Musings and The Girls In The Back Row.
All of these people have great podcasts and you should check them out!

Thanks always to The Shape for the intro/outro music.
