Episode 70: Once Upon a Cabin In The Woods

May 18, 2018  /  Dawn Humphrey

EVILDEAD1-INTRO.jpg

It's time again, for Dawn and Jen to go on a journey of re-discovery through one of horror's most beloved franchises: The Evil Dead. With difficult financing, disastrous location shoots, and being banned outright in several countries, Sam Raimi's The Evil Dead should never have worked.

And yet it did.

The Evil Dead franchise changed the face of horror cinema forever, landing it in the hearts of millions of gore-loving fans and introducing the world to the macabre brilliance of Raimi and his star, Bruce Campbell.

This episode is the first in a series that will cover all three Evil Dead movies and the 2013 remake. Stay tuned.

"The Charleston" composed by James P. Johnson.

"Skin" from The Evil Dead OST by Joseph LoDuca

Intro featuring, "Fritz Was Here" by YoshiBlade (via OCRemix).

Episode 69: Live at DePaul's Celebration of Slashers

May 02, 2018  /  Dawn Humphrey

This episode was recorded live at DePaul's Pop Culture Conference: A Celebration of Slashers!

Joined by the esteemed Dr. Karra Shimabukuro and Professor Danielle Meijer, Dawn posits the question: Were slasher films good for women or bad? You can probably guess the answer, but a wonderful time was had by all!

A HUGE thanks to the team at DePaul for having the podcast as guests and an even bigger thanks to Karra and Danielle for sharing their insights and opinions!

Dr. Karra Shimabukuro got her PhD in medieval and early modern English literature because she was interested in the origins of folkloric figures. Specifically, when she read Paradise Lost, she was interested in where Milton got his idea for Satan, why his portrayal was so different from others. She is interested in the intersection of folkloric figures, literary studies, and popular culture. Her work in medieval and early modern English literature allows her to see the origins of these figures. Folklore allows her to take a long view, from their origins, all the way through now, and popular culture.

Her most recent work includes her book project “Devilish Leaders, Demonic Parliaments, and Diabolical Rebellions in Medieval and Early Modern English Literature,” and a book chapter that analyzes the role of the devil in the culture wars, and his connection to The Last Temptation of Christ and The Passion of the Christ.

Professor Danielle Meijer is an adjunct professor in philosophy at DePaul.  She's working on a book about child liberation and her favorite slasher film is "Who Can Kill a Child?" by Narciso Serrador.

DePaul Pop Culture Conference is an annual fan/academic event at DePaul University. They host thoughtful discussions from fans, scholars, and media makers about popular culture and cult media. Each year's event is themed for an important Pop Culture anniversary.

Thanks always to The Shape for the intro and outro music.

Episode 68: A Podcast Down Under

April 25, 2018  /  Dawn Humphrey

With Jen in Australia, your hosts think it's high time we talked about some Australian horror and took a close look at a problematic favorite: Storm Warning. According to the box office, none of you saw it, but we have a strange affection for it, despite it's rather glaring and offensive flaws.

Speaking of: this movie regrettably comes with a hefty sexual assault warning so be aware.

We would also like to apologize for the occasional sound issues, apparently we've done in another mic cord, they're dropping like redshirts.

Thanks always to The Shape for the intro and outro music. Now also featuring, "Fritz Was Here" by YoshiBlade (via OCRemix).

The "How to Speak Australian" clip was from hijosh on You Tube. You can view the full video HERE.

Episode 67: Behind the Mask: A Podcast Long Overdue

April 18, 2018  /  Dawn Humphrey

behind-the-mask-the-rise-of-leslie-vernon-01-1-g.jpg

We've been talking about this movie for so long, we almost can't believe we haven't done a full episode on it. But we haven't, so this episode, the Women In Caskets take a moment to rave about another favorite. So let's join our favorite documentarian, Taylor Gentry, as she goes Behind the Mask, and witnesses The Rise of Leslie Vernon.

Spoiler alert: It doesn't go well for her. Good for us, bad for her.

Thanks always to The Shape for the intro music. Now also featuring, "Fritz Was Here" by YoshiBlade (via OCRemix).

This episode's outro was "Psycho Killer" by the Talking Heads.

Bonus Episode: Save Horror 2018 March Madness Bracket

April 17, 2018  /  Dawn Humphrey

Untitled.png

Every year, Save Horror runs a horror-themed March Madness bracket, and for the last three years running, we have challenged The Rants Macabre, Miskatonic Musings and now Test Pattern to a friendly competition.

But that means we have some decisions to make. Would you like to hear us make them?

Welcome to the Horrordome, 64 movies enter, one leaves! There's heartbreak, frustration and a little horse-trading, but we think you'll enjoy a peek into our process.

NOTE: This was originally recorded as a Patreon special, but since we've temporarily suspended our Patreon, we're giving it to everyone! Yay!

This bonus episode comes with selections from the Mortal Kombat movie soundtrack, because Dawn's a nerd like that. The tracks sampled were:

  • Utah Saints - Utah Saints Take on the Theme from Mortal Kombat
  • KMFDM - Juke-Joint Jezebel [Metropolis Mix]
  • Geezer - The Invisible
  • Mutha's Day Out - What U See-We All Bleed Red
  • Buckethead - George S. Clinton - Goro Vs. Art
  • George S. Clinton - Demon Warriors-Final Kombat
  • Orbital - Halcyon and On and On

It also featured our regular intro featuring  "Fritz Was Here" by YoshiBlade (via OCRemix).
